Summer is upon us! The warm weather brings lots of picnics, barbeques, and parties. As well as, a lot of good food. Summer is the best time of the year to experiment with fruits and vegetables that you’ve never tried.
Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals, which offer protective health benefits. Aim for 50% of your meal to be non-starchy vegetables. Non-starchy vegetables include broccoli, carrots, greens, and summer squash, just to name a few. Starchy vegetables are potatoes, corn, and peas.
Throughout the season, there is a bounty of produce available. Your local farmer’s market is a great source for new fruits and vegetables. Try a new vegetable (or several) each week. Eat a rainbow – a brightly colored produce rainbow!
